How to find a Church

Tips to Finding a Church Homefind-a-church

Churches come in all shapes and sizes and when searching for a church home it’s important to find the one that best meets the needs and values of you and your family. Below are a few tips Pastor Mark Burton thinks might help you in this important decision.

  1. Pray about it. Ask God to lead you to the church and church family that is right for you.
  2. When considering a church, be sure it is a place where you sense God’s presence and where His presence is seen and heard in the lives of the people.
  3. Find a worship style that helps you to express your worship to God, whether that is a liturgical, traditional or contemporary style.
  4. Ask yourself, “Is this a group of people with whom I can relate or a group to whom I want to get close?”
  5. Check out the essential doctrines of a church. This may be done online if a web site is available or the church will probably have this information available when you visit or will send it to you at your request.
  6. Consider the overall needs of your family and the programs a church offers. Most churches won’t be able to meet every need, so make a prioritized list of your wants and needs and decide which are most important to you. If something isn’t happening that is important to you, in time you may be used to start a new ministry.
  7. Feel free to sit in on any classes your children are in. Get to know the teacher and see how the class is structured.
  8. Don’t wait to find the perfect church or leave what you thought was the perfect church when its imperfections come to light. Churches are made up of forgiven, yet still imperfect people and no matter how loving and good a church may be, no church will ever be perfect.
  9. Don’t judge a church by one visit. Just as people have good days and not so good, so do churches. Visit several times to get a feel for the spirit, love and direction of the church. Most importantly, do the people love Christ and are they following Him?
  10. Don’t be afraid to ask the pastor or leaders questions about what is important to their church. They will be happy to share with you.
